Hi Merry,
I knit the prayer shawl with a size 12 3/4 needle and a 7 mm needle (I think) 2 rows of each and worsted.
When I was done I think I would have had a similar open and closed pattern with just the bigger needles.
I knit more quickly on the smaller needles. You could try just the smaller needles with wrapping the yarn around them.
The shawls are my opportunity to experiment with gauge and mixing yarns. I especially like to use two different yarns at once.
